This does not have to happen to the people of California.

If only our elected representatives in California would roll-up their sleeves and work at ensuring college is accessible and affordable instead they are prisoners of special interests that hijack the future and kill the dreams of our next generation. Pension reform and yes the tax extensions would do much to extend the educational opportunities offered by the world renown California community colleges. Governor Brown would much rather waste time with his promise for an election that will cost the state millions of dollars instead of working with the democratic
legislature to push through a budget that can at least temporarily buy some time until we have REAL political reform. The democratic party in California fails genuine working people who DO NOT belong to a public sector union.It is time for people to take social action and force the politicians to make the tough choices to balance our state budget in a fair and equitable approach that prepares Californians for the future.

Today's children and young people will face a changed and complex career landscape that will require real-time thinking and as mentioned creativity hence I am a proponent for implementing e-books and other digital devices that means more information than ever before in the hands and minds of youth. Maybe more active political participation. Yes with a caveat that such digital devices can be harmful to a young developing brain yet beneficial to a high school or college age student who must juggle reading assignments with career aspirations.

The person profiled in this NYTimes piece knew what he wanted to do with his life how can we guide and direct the many students "stuck"in college into their passion? Again this person does not have a name brand degree.

Students carrying a student loan burden restricts their career choices and opportunities. As I said the community colleges in the USA offer the best hope for retraining and gaining new skills to stay current in a changing career market. Compare the fees with any for profit college there is a massive difference in the fees. Sure you can receive a certificate or degree in a year or less but at what cost to your personal freedom....and sanity.

I remember attending East Los Angeles Community College for FREE.It was the fall of 1982 unemployment was then 10% interest rates were 19% or higher and Reagan was the president.My instructor then used to loan out books or we could check out books for the semester saving hundreds of dollars.Now those days are gone just like traditional pensions and health benefits.Yet community colleges remain the best bargain in America and I believe the future of our country.No need to dive into debt peonage by attending a name brand university I mean Steve Jobs , Bill Gates, Michael Dell and many other successful peopledid not attend or even receive a college degree. Training and upgrading your skills at the community college builds up your brain and life.

Interesting story on debt and personal relationships. Nothing wrong with running a credit check on your potential husband or wife.
Probably will save you a ton of grief and stress when it comes to marriage or having a child.

I think it is important for both members of a relationship to come clean and share financial information.

Maybe should take that step before considering getting serious.

Student loan debt can be killer I mean it's almost impossible to escape from student loan unless you move to another country...or planet.
